An interview of Dan Dukan: business intelligence consultant and Jolicharts user

Dan Dukan, pictured in his diving suit, has been in the business intelligence / analytics / dashboarding / corporate data visualization industry for 17 years. A manager of BI One, a business intelligence consultancy working both for Fortune 500 companies and SMEs, Dan and his team have immediatly decided on adopting Jolicharts a an offer for their small and medium-sized customers. Here’s an interview of Dan Dukan, Jolicharts user and cofounder at BI One.

- Outside of being a HUGE diving fan, who are you Dan Dukan?

Hi, I’ve been in business intelligence for 17 years now. And I am the cofounder and manager of BI One, a consultancy dedicated to business intelligence.

- Why did you choose to turn to business intelligence many years ago?

To me, business intelligence is the best way to help decision-makers better understand their business.

- Can you be more specific on what your company BI One does?

Born in 2006, we’ve been in the SAP BI implementation historically. For 3 years now, we’ve been working with other BI tools to offer our customers the best solution vs. their needs.

- What makes BI One different from the thousands of business intelligence & analytics consultancies out there?

We want to be closer to our customers, and provide them with the best possible BI solution. This is the reason we have the capability to recommend and implement different BI tools.

 – Can you describe 2 achievements that make you proud of your team at BI One?

Primo our first projet, and the most important for us. A full audit and an SAP BI implementation for Saint Gobain Abrasive. 18 months and 6 consultants, the birth of a team! Deuzio the execution of our new strategy for 3 years, where each of them have worked hard to make this new turn.

- What major shifts in the business intelligence and analytics space have you monitored in the recent years?

The change in the use of BI. We have moved away from pure reporting to analysis tools. Recent years have seen the emergence of ‘in memory’ and Cloud BI.

- What are the 2 main drivers of decision-makers for starting a business intelligence or anaytics project?

First driver, the need and will to follow their operations; second driver, their competitors.

- What are your views on SaaS BI?

SaaS BI is the future of BI. SaaS BI is synonymous with cost reductions and less internal IT resources….

- Why did you turn to Jolicharts as a software solution to implement services for your customers?

What I like in Jolichart is that the tool was designed around a clear need. They – at Jolicharts, initially developed a solution to answer their own need! whilst many of the solutions available today offer a lot of features which are at the end of the day never used by customers.

- What do you like most in self-service collaborative business intelligence app Jolicharts?

It’s both very simple to use and extremely easy to share information.

- Outside Jolicharts, which other BI solutions does BI One implement for its customers?

SAP BI, Qlikview and Bime. Plus Jolicharts, that’s 4 BI solutions on which our team at BI One has strong expertise.

- To which population would you recommend Jolicharts?

To small & medium companies, definitely. Large corps will always want as many features as possible, even if to use only 40% of these.

- Looking at the needs of BI One, an SME, do you think Jolicharts is a good match to answer dashboard needs?

Yes! One of the advantages of Jolicharts is that it’s a self-service BI tool: you pay as you go so it adapts small budgets.

An interview of Olivier Baboulet: sustainability consultant and Jolicharts user

Olivier Baboulet is a high flying sustainability strategy consultant working for blue chip corporations around the world. An early adopter of Jolicharts, Olivier has been keen on providing continuous feedback and is already a heavy power user of the dashboarding and collaborative features of the self-service business intelligence application. Probably for these reasons, Olivier has accepted to answer our questions for this very first interview. Thank you so much Olivier for having so kindly accepted to open this series of interviews.

- What do you do Olivier Baboulet?

I am an environmental engineer in the first place.

I began my career in the academic sphere carrying out some research dealing with environmental and social accounting. Like this, I partook in the elaboration of a state-of-the-science hybrid LCA method, partly relying on input-output analysis and partly relying on process-based analysis (LCA). The underlying outcome was a comprehensive and easy-to-use tool for companies and collectivities.

More recently and as a logical follow-up, I went back to the private sector working in an small-size environmental consulting company which objective is to assess the environmental and social benefits/loads of mass market products and production sites and facilities.

- What is the importance of collaborative analytics in your work?

Most of my clients are international companies having BUs scattered all around the world. Environmental and social accounting is a much decentralized process in the extent that data collection needs to occur on a local level, at each and every production site.

Being able to rely upon robust collaborative tools, being upstream for the collection of data or downstream for the restitution of the information is hence of the essence for a seamless communication across the different departments involved in such projects that are, to say the least, data- and analytics-intensive.

- What made you start using Jolicharts?

So far, I’ve been using a very famous BI stand-alone solution. Still, license fees were substantial and being a stand-alone solution implied that each and every site needed to be equipped to collaborate/share. Furthermore, if capabilities and functionalities were numerous, experience showed that only a fraction of them were really resorted to. Since training employees to new tools is always a challenge, a tool that would offer only the most essential functions would immediately stand out of the crop.

Based on this threefold record, I thus started looking for a solution that would combine a SaaS approach with only the most useful features and functionalities so as to ensure an immediate deployment and mastering of it.

Then I found Jolicharts.

- How does Jolicharts help you?

Since I’ve been using Jolicharts, I’ve increased my productivity (and in the same breathe the productivity of my clients) while lowering “logistics” pitfalls.

Indeed, only a web browser is needed in the first place so that a massive-scale deployment across several BU spanning all five continents is a matter of seconds. In addition, Jolicharts offering only the most essential functions and features, handover is greatly facilitated preventing further delays that could have otherwise occur under the form of training sessions for instance. Besides, the pricing subscription model being very lean, I end up paying only for what I consume (be it in terms of features and/or calculation).

Jolicharts is hence a very-easy-to-implement solution regardless of the organization and allows real-time collaboration. No more files to store and organize on my hard drive, only one up in the cloud and always up-to-date. And of course, the rendering of dashboards enables me to pass on my conclusions in a very efficient way.

- Which other self-service business intelligence tools did you use to work with prior to adopting Jolicharts?

To make a long story short, I was referring to QlikView above.

- What’s your favorite feature in Jolicharts?

Mentioning only one would be misleading and over-simplistic. The strength of jolicharts lies in its ability to offer the most useful BI features in a web-based service. That’s the very feature and the very reason why I switched and further prescribed this solution.

Still, and from a more hands-on standpoint, I certainly appreciate, atop of the classical BI features offered by Jolicharts, being able to embed pictures, videos and hyperlinks in my dashboards. Also worth mentioning is the variety of data visualization templates offered enabling an always clear picture, whichever the recipient is (marketing, operations, supply chain, communication, etc.)

- To which population would you recommend Jolicharts? (eg friends, family, customers, co workers, alumni, partners,…)

For those that would need very specific features on the long run they’ll probably need another solution and I cannot blame them in so doing as it’s not the philosophy Jolicharts relies upon.

Still, for those who only use the most essential features of BI solutions and who enjoy a software-as-a-service, that will amply do. And empirically clients, co-workers, suppliers and partners certainly belong to the second group.

To make a long story short, to each their own. Whatever the user, he will get his share so that I am inclined to recommend it to everyone.
